Choose your backup storage region

A site’s storage region is where Backvera keeps the primary copy of its backups in Backvera Cloud. Each site has its own region, so you can store a site’s backups close to where it is hosted – for faster backups and restores – or keep them in a particular part of the world for compliance reasons.

The regions you can choose

You pick from the regions Backvera offers – for example EU, US, and Oceania. Choosing the region closest to your server usually gives the fastest backups and restores. Region choice is available on every plan, including Free.

Choose a region when you connect a site

In the Connect wizard, the first step has a storage region option. Leave it on Use project default to inherit the project’s default, or pick a specific region for this site. If you choose nothing, the site uses the project default.

Set a default for new sites

To avoid choosing every time, set a default on the project: open Project settings and, under Defaults for new sites, pick a Default storage region. New sites added to that project start in that region unless you override them; existing sites keep their current region. See organize sites with projects.

Change a site’s region later

You can move a site to a different region at any time: open the site, go to Settings > General, pick a new region in the Storage card, and save. Here is what happens next:

  • New backups go to the new region from then on.
  • The next backup is a full one. Backups are stored and de-duplicated per region, so the first backup after a switch re-uploads everything – allow a few hours for it on a large site.
  • Existing backups stay put. Backvera does not move old snapshots between regions – they remain in the region they were created in.
  • Those older backups are still fully restorable and downloadable, and they are cleaned up from the old region over time by your normal retention settings.

Because switching region starts a fresh full backup, change it only when you have a good reason – for example, after moving your site to a host in another region or compliance reasons.
